I love the film and I also bought it on VHS XD But the show is so much… more It’s complete with amazing characters and amazing plot and I think is even more recognizable than the film. To cut it all just for a remake is a sad waste….

Agree. The movie was a good start, but the shows added so much to it, just think about the System Lords concept or the Five Races, the Asgard, the Ancients, the whole Atlantis and Pegasus Galaxy storyline… it’s so complex and amazing and hardly any of that universe was established in the original movie and I can’t believe they are going to pretend that none of that exists :’(

About the Stargate reboot

Well, yeah, BUT. This will be the reboot of the MOVIE, NOT the shows and that’s a HUGE DIFFERENCE.

Because Emmerich doesn’t accept the shows as canon, so it means no Sam Carter, no Teal’c, no General Hammond, different Jack and different Daniel, no Daedalus, no Asgard, no F-302s, no Stargate Command probably as we know it, no Atlantis, no John Sheppard, no Rodney McKay, no wraith, no Pegasus galaxy, no Replicators, no Ori, no Vala, no Antarctic base with a chair, no Ancient technology whatsoever, including the puddlejumpers!!!, no Janet Frasier, no Carson Beckett, and I could go on with the list.

NOPE, I DO NOT WANT A REBOOT LIKE THIS

I wouldn’t mind a reboot, beause it’ll bring more fans who’ll find out about the shows.
But yeah, it’s gonna end up being pretty different I guess.
And it’s not so much the loss of those characters but the character of the shows themselves.
It was serious but light enough that you could enjoy every episode.

The movie was great, don’t get me wrong. I watched it a couple times as a kid before the show hit TV and confused me because Jack looked and acted different.
And while I’ll ever love the shows more, the movie holds a special place in my heart and I’d quite like to see where they originally planned it to go.
But if the tone of it is anything to go by, it’ll be some action show in space and there’s been plenty of scifi shows that’re predominantly serious.

tldr; Gimme back Carter!

I’d be happy if the reboot would bring more fans to rediscover the shows, but I don’t think that will happen, because the movies will be so different and will have almost nothing in common with the shows that I don’t think the new fans of the movies will embrace the shows.

I haven’t seen the old movie recently, so I can be wrong but as I recall it was in many ways different from SG-1: in the movie it was said, that Ra was the last of his kind, there was no mention of others and his form was very different from the goa’uld parasite in the shows, therefore the Jaffa was different, as far as we know those they used were the only two stargates to exist, there’s no mention about a network of gates etc and yes, the whole tone was different. I agree with you in that, I loved tv!Jack and John the best, because they were smartasses, not just emotionally repressed though soldiers and it’s almost sure that movie!Jack will be nothing like that.

I tried to find more info about the upcoming movies and I found this article:

According to Devlin, the second film was supposedly going to center on a different mythology than the Egyptian motif used in the first, while the third film would tie various mythologies together.

Now I’m not saying that I don’t like the movie, I love it, I have brought it on VHS back in the day (yes, I’m that old) and later on DVD and out of curiosity I’d be interested in what they have planned originally.

But this whole reboot thing feels kinda like if someone’s wrote a 10k story that was somewhat popular at that time and it prompted Tolkien to create Middle Earth and the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit and the Silmarillion and now that original author wants to write something almost completely different and much less rich in details and wants to name it Lord of the Rings to replace the original, trying to use the success of the Tolkien books and movies to promote his own because it was their prompt that started the whole thing.. It feels greedy and wrong to me.

The Stargate universe has been established in the shows, it has a very rich history and it has enormous opportunities for future explorations and I don’t think it’s fair to those writers who created that amazing universe to their work of 17 years be discarded like it worth nothing.

A friend of mine said that now I understand how he feels about the Star Trek reboot, but I think we have it so much worse with Stargate, because Star Trek kept the original timeline and universe and expanded it with a canon Starfleet Academy AU with the same characters and some of the same events, but with Stargate we are left with almost nothing from the established universe and it makes me really sad.

Could you be any more thirsty, Roland Emmerich? Like seriously. The last thing Stargate needs is a reboot. Especially from someone who has made it abundantly clear that he doesn’t like the series that spawned from the original movie. Yet is so blatantly planning to profit off of the massive fanbase that series gained over the decade it was on the air. ‘Oh, I hate the series. But it has made a whole bunch of money and has a shit ton of dedicated fans and is one of the most successful sci-fi shows in tv history - let me back in, I wanna play again!’

No. Fuck you and your reboot and your obvious desire to profit off of something that got big without you

All of the above!

I was so happy for the few minutes until I read the old article about it on blastr which offers a bit more info than the above one, the most interesting is this:

The films will almost certainly not connect to the SG-1 universe, either, since Emmerich has never really been a huge fan of the small-screen version of the franchise. To this day, he maintains it is not a “canon” continuation from his film.

When I read this, I saw red. FUCK YOU VERY MUCH EMMERICH! The Stargate franchise wouldn’t be anywhere without the series, and the fact that you made the first movie DOES NOT give you the right to dismiss them, because you SOLD YOUR RIGHTS to do that to MGM. They had the rights, they made the shows therefore it’s canon. Without the shows there would not be any chance for you to leech more money off the film, because without the shows it would have been long forgotten.

I will not spend even a cent on the new movies, because when Atlantis was canceled, they promised a movie for us, but they didn’t have the money - okay, financial crisis, we understood that. Now they have the money and suddenly they want nothing to do with the shows we love so dearly. Well then, I WILL NOT consider the new movies canon and I want nothing to do with them.
